Back-to-School Money Saving Tips for Parents

August 02, 2018

Let's face it, your kids want the best clothes and supplies money can buy when it's time to return to school in the fall. That doesn't mean you as parents have to spend a fortune. Here are a few tips to keep the kids and your wallet happy this season.

Wait to buy the brand names

The kids might find trendy clothes or notebooks during summer break, but will beg you to buy what their friends have when they start school. Avoid unnecessary spending and wait.

Shop end-of-summer sales

There are sales everywhere once school starts and Labor Day has passed, so stock up on all your favorites if you can hold out until then.

Stick to the list

The supply list that appears to come out earlier (and longer) each year, and don't feel like you have to have everything right away! Hold off on extra supplies and stick to the basics until your child starts school and finds out what they will actually use.

Utilize your grocery stores for the basics

Your local grocer might have deals on basic supplies like pencils and paper that you won't find in large chains.

Let the kids raid your cabinets

The kids can select home-office supplies and then personalize them in unique ways. For example, decorate inexpensive plain, white binders with digital photos by creating a collage and inserting the page into the plastic outer cover.

Hold a back-to-school swap

Live in a neighborhood with same-age children? Host a swap! Find parents looking for supplies and trade out old supplies for new.

Plan meals in advance

School lunches might be more expensive than what you can make at home from your grocery list. Checking your weekly sales can save you money in the long run.

Buy bright

To keep yourself from spending endless amounts of money replacing lost supplies, label your child's items with bright colors to keep them from disappearing.

Shop online

What you can't find in stores, can easily be found online using digital coupons, online-exclusive sales and loyalty rewards.
